Beginner’s Guide to Kendo Gear and Etiquette
Starting Your Journey: A Beginner’s Guide to Kendo Gear and Etiquette
Are you curious about Kendo but feeling intimidated by the gear? The big question is, do you need that scary armor right away? Spoiler alert: the answer is no! Let's explore how you can ease into Kendo without breaking the bank or feeling overwhelmed.
The First Lesson: What to Wear
As a beginner, the most important thing is to wear comfortable gym clothes that allow for movement. You don’t need a fancy uniform to start your Kendo journey. Additionally, practicing in bare feet on the dojo floor is essential; it helps you connect with the ground and enhances your balance.
The Shinai (Bamboo Sword)
The Shinai, or bamboo sword, is more than just a tool for striking; it's a means of self-improvement. The bamboo construction allows for safe practice and is designed to help you develop your skills without the risks associated with traditional weapons. Using a Shinai is about learning the art of Kendo, not about fighting.
Understanding the Bogu
As you progress in Kendo, you will eventually encounter Bogu, the protective armor worn during practice. The Bogu consists of several parts: Men (helmet), Kote (gloves), Do (chest protector), and Tare (waist protector). Remember, acquiring Bogu is something to work towards after months of practice, not something to worry about on your first day.
Dojo Etiquette (Reiho)
Respect and discipline are key components of Kendo. At the Miami Valley Kendo Club, we practice Reiho, which involves bowing as a sign of respect to your instructors and fellow practitioners. This respect is the most important piece of equipment you can bring to the dojo.
Your Kendo Journey
Don’t forget, the club provides loaner Shinai for all beginners, so you can focus on learning the fundamentals without the pressure of purchasing gear right away. Kendo is a lifelong journey, where your mindset and dedication are more valuable than the equipment you use.
